Creditor Guide: O2

O2 is one of the largest mobile networks in the UK, which has been in partnership with broadband provider Virgin Media since 1st June 2021. From that date onwards, all Virgin Mobile users were moved over to O2’s range of plans. O2 has since provided their own fixed networks to 17.2 million homes, serviceable alongside a mobile network that covers 99% of the nation’s population with 4G, and more than 50% of the nation’s population with 5G services – all of which come at a cost.

O2 Payment Support

With the cost of living crisis continuing to have an impact on the economy, many are unfortunately still facing financial hardship. However, O2 does have policies in place to support you with payments.

If you’re struggling to make O2 payments, you should get in touch with the O2 Payment Management team as soon as possible. They will help to find the right solution for you, this could include:

Changing your bill date.

If you are on an O2 Refresh tariff bought on or after 22nd March 2018, you can move to a different tariff.

Adding or lowering your Spend Cap (if you have one).

Keeping an eye on your usage and bill (click here for advice on budgeting and money saving tips).

Moving to Pay As You Go (an early termination fee may apply if you are in contract).

If you meet eligibility requirements, you can set-up an affordable repayment plan with My O2 (this may include restrictions on your services to avoid incurring further charges).

Late O2 Payments & Credit File Defaults

If you don’t think you’ll be able to pay your bill on time, O2 has procedures in place to give you some breathing space.

If you make a late payment, a record of this will appear on your credit file. Payments that are overdue by 1 month will show as a ‘1’, 2 months will show as a ‘2’, etc. After O2’s full collections process, if your account balance has still not been paid after six months, a default will appear on your credit file. 

When you pay your account after a default has been loaded, your credit file will show as ‘satisfied’ – displaying the initial date it was due to be paid and the date it was cleared. The default record will stay on your credit file for six years from the default date. 

Missing payments, or making late payments, can negatively affect your credit rating. This may harm your chances of being able to borrow money from lenders in the future. As O2 is legally obliged to share a true and accurate record of your payment history with credit agencies, it is very important that you aim to make your payments on time. O2 Debt Management

If your defaulted account remains unpaid, you will receive a letter from O2 explaining that it has been passed onto a Debt Collection Agency (DCA). This means the DCA becomes responsible for loading or amending account information on your credit file.

If this happens, the first thing you should do is contact the DCA to discuss any disputed loadings or amendments – their contact information will be provided in the letter from O2.
